Born in London and educated at the University of Cambridge and University College London, Lloyd began his career working as an assistant director at the Royal Court Theatre in London. 

He went on to work as a director of both new work and revivals of classic plays across a range of subsidised and commercial theatre companies in the UK including The Gate Theatre, London; the West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds; Theatre Royal, Plymouth; Theatre 503, London; Library Theatre, Manchester; Hampstead Theatre, London as well as working for ACT Productions, Sonia Friedman, Playful Productions and for Theatre Royal Bath Productions among others.

He was invited by Glyndebourne Opera to work with Jonathan Kent on a new production of The Fairy Queen - his first experience of the opera rehearsal room - before enjoying a varied and exciting (if short) career in opera working in the UK, the USA, Japan, France, Russia and Spain with companies including The Mariinsky, St Petersburg, The Edinburgh International Festival, Tokyo National Opera and the Teatro Real, Madrid. He was recently nominated as Best Newcomer in the International Opera Awards 2017.

He lives in London and Berlin.
